MLO 5: Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion
5.1 Students demonstrate that they have actively immersed themselves in authentic Japanese cultural and linguistic environments and have internalized the language and cultural experience, from which they have developed a personal understanding and new perspectives of the community.
This MLO was waived for students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic since Japan closed its borders, of which I was one. Despite attempting to study abroad three times and even being accepted to CSUIP and then to Waseda University, to do so, I was unable to go. CSUIP only accepts 15 students from all CSU campuses to go to Waseda, and Waseda reserves the right to refuse anyone they do not see as fit for their program, even if one had been accepted to CSUIP. I managed to pass all the rounds and be accepted, only to find out the last time, that despite the borders being loosened for students, they were only being loosened for degree seeking students, and not study abroad students, and had the program cancelled a few days later. As I picked CSUMB solely based on its breadth of study abroad options, and not because of the strength of any of its programs, I am sorely bitter about having been unable to go, and will truly regret it for the entirety of my life. As such before my acrimony in regards to this situation seeps through further, I will cease writing about this topic. Despite this, after I graduate, I will be living and working in Japan as an ALT through JET. Though it was a long and nerve-wracking process to get in, I was lucky enough to prove that I had the capabilities that JET was looking for. I look forward to finding out where I will be placed soon!
However, due to all this, I have no evidence to provide for this MLO.
