MLO 4: Research and Technology
4.1 Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2 Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3 Students collect, manage, and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Many of my culture courses here have required in depth research papers to be undertaken, and varying academic levels. Through my courses I have learned how to identify and find other scholarly works on the subject, that I am looking for. I have also learned how to undertake and create a review of literature on a subject that I am producing a research paper for, first in Social Issues in Japan and then further through my Capstone project. I also have learned about and how to use technologies to assist in my research and studied of the Japanese language, such as Rikai-kun in my Introduction to Translation and Interpretation class or Suzuki-kun, which helps with learning pitch accent, in Structure of the Japanese Language. Through Capstone I have learned how to use current technology to collect, manage, and analyze the data I collected. I created a Google form to send out as a survey, and learned all that it was capable, as well as incapable, of. I then through Sheets had to learn how to manage all the data I received, such as separating out multi-choice answers, as well as creating graphs and manipulating them to be in a form that showed what I needed them to. From their I had to learn how to analyze the data and create meaningful result from it, which is what my Capstone is.
For evidence, please see Fall 2018's Anime & Manga in Modern Japan, Fall 2019's Japanese Pop Culture, Social Issues in Japan, and my Capstone project.
