Develops students’ critical and analytical reading ability of literature from the perspective of the Asian American experience. Grounds the discussion of Asian American experiences, literatures, and cultures in history and theory.
This course as is suggested by its title focused on Asian American literature. It fulfils MLO3, our secondary culture requirement. Through it, I was able to gain a perspective of different cultures from Japanese culture, and allowed me to make a comparisons between Japanese culture and other cultures, as well as my own. In this course we examined the works of many different Asian American authors. We looked at poetry, short stories and essays, books, and plays within the course. We also looked at a variety different parts of Asian American cultures, from Chinese American, to Vietnamese American, to even Japanese American authors. Each provided a different perspective on culture as well as the intersection of culture and what it means to have what some call a hybrid identity. For my mid-term paper, I examined how different forms of religion became a literary metaphor across two authors from different backgrounds. This I have included below as evidence.
